Switchboard Upgrades

Switchboard Upgrades & Safety Switch Installation

Old fuse boxes, ceramic fuses, and boards without safety switches are one of the most common jobs we do — brought up to current standards so the rest of the house is actually protected.

Signs it's time

Time for a switchboard upgrade?

If your board looks like any of these, it's worth getting checked.

  • Ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers
  • No safety switches (RCDs) fitted at all
  • Nuisance tripping every time you run a few appliances
  • Buying or selling — a pre-purchase electrical inspection flags this fast
  • Adding solar, an EV charger, or a big new appliance
  • The board is visibly old, rusted, or overcrowded with add-on wiring
Why it's worth doing properly

Why it matters

Safety switches save lives

A modern board with RCDs cuts power fast enough to prevent a fatal shock — old fuse boards often have none fitted.

Fire risk reduction

Ceramic fuses and overloaded old boards are a known fire risk under sustained modern loads.

Insurance & sale readiness

Many insurers and buyers now expect a compliant board — this removes it as a sticking point.

Room to grow

A properly sized board leaves headroom for solar, EV charging, or future renovations.

What's included

What a switchboard upgrade includes

Every upgrade is scoped to the property — typically covering:

  • Removal of old fuses & obsolete wiring
  • New circuit breakers
  • Safety switches (RCDs) on all circuits
  • Surge protection where appropriate
  • Correctly labelled circuits
  • Compliance certificate on completion
  • Load capacity review for future additions
  • Metering & supply authority liaison if required
All switchboard work is carried out to AS/NZS 3000 (the Australian/New Zealand Wiring Rules), with a compliance certificate issued on completion.
Recent job

Flagged during a pre-purchase inspection, sorted before settlement

A buyer's pre-purchase electrical inspection turned up a rusted ceramic-fuse board with no safety switches at all — a common find in older Southern Highlands homes, and exactly the kind of thing that spooks a buyer or an insurer. With settlement on a deadline, we assessed the board, quoted it on the spot, and had a fully compliant switchboard with RCDs on every circuit installed and certified before the sale went through.

One less thing standing between them and settlement day — and a board with the headroom to add solar or an EV charger down the track.

We'll assess the board on site, explain exactly what needs doing and why, and quote it before any work starts.
