EV Charger Installation

Home EV Charger Installation in NSW: Costs & Rebates Explained

The honest state of NSW rebates for home EV chargers, and the factors that actually drive installation cost.

Rebates, honestly

Is there a NSW rebate for home EV chargers?

As of this article, there is no dedicated NSW Government rebate for installing an EV charger at a private home — that's different to the incentives that exist for business EV fleets and for some other household energy upgrades. Rebate programs do change, so it's worth checking the NSW Government energy website before you plan a budget around one.

Cost factors

What actually drives the installation cost

Without a rebate to factor in, the real question is what makes one installation cost more than another.

Switchboard capacity

A home charger draws a sustained load for hours at a time. If the switchboard doesn't have spare capacity, that gets sorted first — sometimes as part of a broader switchboard upgrade.

Cable run length

Distance from the switchboard to the charger location (garage, carport, driveway) drives cabling cost more than almost anything else — a charger next to the meter box is a different job to one 20 metres away.

Charger type & power rating

A basic single-phase charger is a smaller job than a three-phase fast charger, which needs three-phase supply available at the property and different cabling.

Dedicated circuit & protection

EV chargers need their own dedicated circuit with correctly rated RCD protection under AS/NZS 3000 — not shared with other power points.

Smart/app-connected chargers

Chargers with load management, solar integration, or scheduling add setup time beyond the electrical connection itself.

Supply authority involvement

Larger installs occasionally need sign-off from the local supply authority (Endeavour Energy in this area) if the connection's total load is affected.

We assess switchboard capacity and cable run as part of every EV charger quote — a generic "per charger" price online won't reflect what your specific property needs.

Get your EV charger installed properly

Tell us your charger make/model (or that you haven't picked one yet) and where you want it mounted — we'll check your switchboard and quote it properly.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is there a NSW Government rebate for home EV chargers?

Not currently a dedicated one for private home installations, as distinct from incentives available to business EV fleets. Rebate programs can change, so check the NSW Government energy website for the latest before budgeting around one.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade to install an EV charger?

Not always — it depends on how much spare capacity your existing board has. We check this as part of every EV charger quote.

Can I install a three-phase EV charger?

Only if three-phase power is already connected to the property, or can be arranged with the supply authority — we'll confirm what's available at your address before quoting a three-phase install.
